Write a short summary about the book.

The Petrakis family lives in the small Greek seaside village of Plaka. Just off the coast is the tiny island of Spinalonga, where the nation's leper colony once was located—a place that has haunted four generations of Petrakis women. There's Eleni, ripped from her husband and two young daughters and sent to Spinalonga in 1939, and her daughters Maria, finding joy in the everyday as she dutifully cares for her father, and Anna, a wild child hungry for passion and a life anywhere but Plaka. And finally there's Alexis, Eleni's great-granddaughter, visiting modern-day Greece to unlock her family's past. Eleni died, and Maria was cured and eventually led a happy life. Anna was shot dead by her husband because she cheated and Alexis refused to marry her boyfriend.

Conclusion

A richly enchanting novel of lives and loves unfolding against the backdrop of the Mediterranean during World War II, The Island is an enthralling story of dreams and desires, of secrets desperately hidden, and of leprosy's touch on an unforgettable family. The most charming character is Maria who is kind and has courage. Her story cheered lots of people. Even though she was infected with leper and abandoned by her fiancé, she still held courage for life and tried her best to help others. Eventually she gained true love and led a happy life. However, her sister Anna was married to a rich man and was finally shot dead by her husband because she cheated him. Anna was selfish, pretentious, and snobbish. To some extent, she led to her own death. Giorgis, father of Maria and Anna, was a tough and kind man who gave his life to love his wife and children. He deserved to be respected.

Describe the character.

Maria was a pretty girl with brown eyes, a slim waist, a neat bosom and muscular arms built up by years of hard physical work. She was fragile and strong who added innocence to such sweet beauty. Compared to her sister Anna, Maria had an altogether gentler and quieter nature. Unlike Anna, Maria did not find domestic work belittling. She was naturally practical and sometimes enjoyed helping her father clean and cook. Maria was a mistress of restraint who was thoughtful. She had learned to control her feelings and in this way she kept up the appearance of being contented. She was kind and loved her family very much. She always held courage for life and was ready to help others.
