Report of English interpreting practicum

As a senior student, I have to face the problem of finding a job. There are many choices for us. And it’s necessary for us to know more about our future jobs. This semester, our college arranges the interpreting practicum for us.

It is known to all, among numerous professions related to English, interpreting work is the most challenging. People with advanced skills in Chinese and English and good reaction capability will be qulified for it. I think that it is the highly specialized profession. This semester, we have the opportunity to get in touch with interpreting and we can know more about it.

During this practicum, we are divided into seven groups. And every group has different tasks. The main content of our interpreting is concerned with our daily life. We have realized that learning English for so many years, we even don’t know some words which is connected with our daily life. It is really a pity! And our teacher is very sensible, so he let us use words about our daily life to make sentences and then to do some interpreting work. The part of mine is to look for some materials which are about trousers. First, I look for some Chinese words concerning the classification of trousers. During this process, I find that there are many different classifications about trousers, and every time I clear up some useful information. Then I search for relevant English words. When translating, I get some English meaning from some translation software. However, some are not precise. So I also receive some information from wikipedia as it is authoritative. Finally I get some pictures on the internet. I sum up all the information and give it to my partners.

Though our interpreting practicum lasts four days all together, we learned a lot which we can’t contact with. We not only understand the importance and necessity of the job, but also learn more about the social common sense. In this era of unprecedentedly fierce competition of social work, the knowledge to those who are coming to society is particularly important. Through this internship, we will make every effort to learn more professional knowledge. At the same time, continuous efforts should be made to absorb more knowledge.

I deeply feel the importance of the accumulation of knowledge. Due to the usual acquisition of all aspects is not enough and basic knowledge is not very solid, interpreting can be a challenge for us. It can improve our reaction capability. What’s more, in the aspect of perseverance, mind and courage, we can improve ourselves. There are great demands for good interpreters. We should seize the opportunity and make enough preparations for being a good interpreter. Although it is difficult, we have to spare no effort trying ourselves.

Through this practicum, we have a comprehensive knowledge of interpreting. We futher understand and accept the knowledge which is learnt in the classroom. So the theory can be applied in the actual production. As a student who is going out of college, we need to master more professional knowledge and strengthen our practice and design capabilities in the limited time. It is conducive to the development of our future and we can be successful.

Report on practice of spoken english

Name: instructor:Ⅰ、the basic situation of practice

On May 5th, 2013, we English major students started our practice of spoken English in Yangshuo county, Guangxi province. It lasted until May 11th. Xiaoxuhua, as our instructor, she teached us a lot and gave us some useful advice on daily life and practice of spoken English. There are almost 90 students here. They were divided into several groups and each group consists of 4 to 6 students. I was in a 4-people group. Ⅱ、the process and content of practice

We arrived at yangshuo very late at night on May 5th, so we indeed started our practice of spoken English on May 6th. Our group discussed the topic of the society and daily lives. One discussing question is that do you think people should do things that they do not enjoy doing? I gave my answer :Yes! And I also stated my three reasons. Firstly, people have to study at school with heavy tasks and endless exercises which is not adored by all the people but actually everyone has to do it to improve their competitiveness or to find a good job in the future time. Secondly, although not everyone likes sports, we students have to attend P.E. class and do some sports, such as running, long jump, high jump and so on, for the sake of keeping good health. Last but not least, there are many jobs which are tiresome, dirty and of low status in our society, but still certain people work at those positions, which helps the society functions well. Our discussion ended at noon.

We are free the whole afternoon, so with the guidance of our instructor, xiaoxuhua, we come to the west street where there are many foreigners who we can talk to in English after we have a good noon break. We met 2 English-speaking foreigners in the west street and started my first experience of talking with foreigners. At the very beginning, I was somewhat nervous and can not chat with them very fluently, but they were so kind and patient that I calmed down gradually and had a good talk with them about 2 hours. During our talk, I found my lack of vocabulary and a broad scope of knowledge. However, I also thanks to the talk that it opens my

way to chat with foreigners fluently and positively. I really enjoy it. The following day, my group discussed another question that what do you

want most in a friend? And as far as I am concerned, I think a thoughtful friend I want most. A thoughtful friend can not only bring you warm and comfort when you are upsetting or heart-broken but also increase the harmony and sentiment between the two friends rather than friction, because he is thoughtful that he will be generous and tolerate your small shortcomings. A thoughtful friend also can easily understand you and will not misunderstand your meanings or even twist you, which I like and appreciate.

This afternoon, all of us had a trip to a beautiful sight in yangshuo whose

name is Ten-mile Gallery. There are many rivers and mountains in there and the mountains are very different from mountains in my hometown. Yangshuo’s

mountains consist of hard rocks with vast sheet of green trees on it and they are very tall and sharp. We then sat on a bamboo raft drifting in the water and had a close contact with the water and mountains there, how much fun ah!

On May 8th, our group discussed the topic of marriage and family .everyone

has her own ideas on the question that do you think romantic love is the only factor for a couple to live a happy life. And my opinion is romantic love is a rather important factor but not the only factor for a couple to live a happy life. Romantic love is rather important because it means life partner will make romantic surprise now and then for each other, which can not only increase the love between them but adjust or light up the atmosphere when life is hard and boring. However, romantic love is not the only factor for a couple to live a happy life. There are many other important factors on influence. Firstly, trust between a couple is a significant factor, which increase harmony as well as love in their everyday lives. Secondly, to be realistic, a good economic condition is also important, for it can guarantee the basic necessities and education fee of the couple’s children and many other things. Thirdly, maintaining good relative relations between both sides is important too.

bustling and crowded and the beautiful and various goods on special feature enhanced the graceful bearing of the west street. We encountered many foreigners and said “hello” to each other. After a while, we started our talks with four Australians. They are three old men and a young son. At first, I walked to these men and asked if we can take photos together? Then we expanded our topics. Because of the first talk with foreigners, this time I behaved pretty bravery and fluent. We talked geography, food, places of interest and many other things. The old man talked to me is so kind that he often pointed out my language mistakes and gave me enough time to talk with him. Frankly speaking, our talk broadened my horizon to a certain extent.

On May 9th, we discussed the question who is the most unforgettable person

in your life and why? And my answer is one of my best friends, because she teached me a lot and touched me deeply. This afternoon, we had our second trip to another sight after lunch. We went to the butterfly spring and then walk into a karst cave near the spring. In the karst spring, there are a vast sea of all kinds of rocks which were affected mainly by water. Then, we came to a primitive tribe and experienced its unique tribal culture.

The next day we had our spoken English examination. The place to exam is

my room, so I was the first one to have my examination. As far as I am concerned, I think I behaved well in my spoken English, because I even did not write a small passage on the paper in advance and I was rather fluently. I owed it to my daily discussion of English and my talks with those foreigners.

May 11th, we were on the train back to our school.

Ⅲ、conclusions of the practice

As a whole, I was excited and modest during my practice of spoken English,

as is my first practice in my life. And there are many things remained for me to learn and to experience. I need to enrich myself not only in knowledge but also in

communication and the ways of the world and so on. One is never too old to learn.

Before the practice of spoken English, I said little oral English in my daily life and the spoken English has always been my weak spot which brings me much bad

influence on many aspects. but what make things worse is I did not make any progress on it. After the practice of spoken English in yangshuo, I have three gains.

1. Practice makes perfect. We are not born a genius. If you want learn a subject well,

you need to put your whole heart into it and work hard. The key point in speaking English well is to speak more English in your daily life.

2. Try to behave bravely and wisely. The chance is to catch by yourself. You are the

only person who takes responsibility for your life. It needs your courage to walk the first step to speak to foreigners and act in a appropriate way.

3. We should master huge amounts of vocabulary and have a vast sheet of

information on various fields. If you want have a successful talk with

English-speaking people, you may as well obey that principle.

I think during the practice of spoken English I had two points that did not do

very well. The first one is I haven’t prepared much material about topics concerned with the practice of spoken English that my talks with foreigners were of few depth and richness. The second one is I only talked to several foreigners during the 5-day practice of spoken English. And the progresses I should make are not only should I enrich the amounts of English vocabulary and have a deep and broad view but also I need to be more active and diligent. After all, diligence is the means by which one makes up for one’s dullness.
