一、 英文求学申请信的格式和正文内容

英文求学申请信与普通信函的格式一样，包括信头（写信人的地址和写信日期）、收信人的姓名和地址、称呼、正文、结束语和签名。

求学申请信是为了申请上某所学校而写给该校招生办公室或有关人员的信。中国学生申请到国外大学学习，首先要与学校有关部门或人员联系，索取入学申请表和有关资料，然后填好申请表并寄回学校。国外大学一般都要求申请人提供学历证书（如毕业证和学位证明）和在校学习期间的成绩单，成绩单必须由申请人所在学校提供并直接寄往所申请的大学。如果申请人没有获得国外大学的奖学金或其他经济资助，就要有经济担保证明。

二、 英文求学申请信正文部分的行文技巧

1、 简短的开场白明确陈述写信的目的，即申请什么专业和学位，从何得知申请信息等；入学申请应明确说明申请何类性质或何种学位的课程，准备何时入学等；

2、 主体段用来概述自己的情况，包括年龄、专业、学历、资历、特长、兴趣等，只在给对方留下深刻的印象。即使附有履历也应在主题段总结说明自己的基本情况，强调自己具备充分的申请资格。

3、 结束段主要用来敦请对方关照，说明附件。根据需要，还可以在主题段与结束段之间增补段落，说明其他具体情况，如外语水平、获奖情况、经济能力等。

三、 中国学生在写英文求学申请信时应注意的问题

1、 行文技巧

中国学生的写作重点往往不是提供个人资料，说明自己的基本情况，而是一味强调自己申请的原因和自己的需求。例如：

We lack the technology, we need it. China is carrying out reform……So we need his technology.

这样写是不符合求学申请信的要求的。写作时申请人应把自己的实力、专长、特点等阐明清楚，以此来说服读者，让对方感到你值得他们为你提供这次求学机会，要知道对方是不会因为你需要就为你提供求学机会的。

2、 语言表达

在介绍个人情况时，为了引起读者的重视，中国学生频繁地使用形容词最高级来评价自己。例如：

I am your best candidate and I had been granted an excellent pass.

这种表达方式也是不可取的，对自己的评价应本着实事求是的原则，充分说明自己的客观情况，不要夸大其词，过分标榜，要能使人阅后感到真实可信，否则只能适得其反。

另外，中国学生偏好以情感人，喜欢用一些私人化的非正式的表达方式。例如： I would be very happy and hope we will be able to keep in touch in the future.

这种表达和申请信的正式问题是不相符的。写作时语言表达应该正式，谴词造句

要平实具体。

3、 说服劝诱策略

求学申请信的目的在于是收信人了解申请人的要求和与此相关的情况，以便对方做出有利于申请人的决定，为了达到这一目的，一般采用自我推销或自我评价策略（self-appraisal），而中国学生常常采用自我美化（self-glorification）、吹捧对方和自我贬低策略（self-degradation）

自我美化策略：申请人极力美化自己。例如：

I am a graduate in mining engineering having a shining academic record in my credit. I have been given admission in the graduate school, university of…,USA… 这种自我评价主观性强，缺乏可信度。

吹捧对方策略：申请人极力吹捧对方学校或者其所属国。例如：

I have secured first division marks (Grade B) in the said exam and on the above basis I intend to complete my further studies in the field of Medicine in My loving great country, USA.

申请人的语气过分热情，对对方百般恭维，这样反而给人留下不好的印象。 自我贬低：申请人常常希望通过对其经济困难的描述来博得对方的同情。例如： I belong to a third world country…Due to this feeling of immense kindness and

generosity of Americans both literally as well as practically, I a needy student is able to pen down this request for financial assistance in education.

… the education abroad is very expensive and we cannot afford it… So, I request your honor to please support a poor student financially, so that he can become a bright mind for humanity…

申请人企图以情感人，不是对对方百般恭维就是对自己妄自菲薄，这都不会给对方留下好印象。所以在写申请信时，申请人在态度上应坦诚真挚，不卑不亢，这样才会起到积极的效果。

Letters of Recommendation

Three letters of recommendation are required; two letters must come from an academic source. If your background includes industrial experience, involvement in performing arts, athletics, public service, or entrepreneurial activities, you may wish to include one reference who can comment on that part of your experience. Indicate on the recommendation form whether you are waiving your right to see the letter of recommendation. We require two official and sealed copies from all previous colleges or universities attended for one year or more full time. The institution should send you your transcripts in a sealed envelope. Transcripts received opened are not considered official. In addition to the paper transcripts, applicants are required to upload scanned unofficial transcripts as part of their application.

Some institutions do not release transcripts directly to students. In such cases, we will accept transcripts sent directly from the institution.

GRE Results

Applicants are required to take the GRE aptitude test (verbal, quantitative, and analytical). No GRE Subject test is required. Applications to the M.S. and Ph.D. program are considered for admission in the autumn quarter only.

Criteria

To be eligible for admission to graduate programs at Stanford, applicants must meet one of the following conditions:

1. completion of a bachelor's degree from a U.S. college or university accredited

by a regional accrediting association; or

2. completion of an international degree that is equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's

degree from a college or university of recognized standing. The competition for admission is keen, and is granted to students who exhibit an excellent academic record and strong research potential.

Students will be expected to enter with a series of core competencies in mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, computing, and engineering. The backgrounds of students entering the program will be assessed by the examination of their undergraduate transcripts and research experiences. Specifically, we will require that students have completed mathematics through multivariable calculus and differential equations, completed a series of undergraduate biology courses (equivalent to BIO 41, 42, 43 series) and completed physics, chemistry, and computer sciences courses required of all undergraduate majors in engineering. Applications must be submitted using the on-line applicatin form. Paper applications are no longer accepted. opportunity is intended for outstanding candidates in graduate study leading to the PhD. To be considered for assistance as an entering student, it is only necessary to submit the application for admission to our Ph.D. program with supporting documents. Notification regarding financial aid is sent to recipients in March and April.

Training Grant Support

The Department of Bioengineering has access to a variety of training grants sponsored by the National Institutes of Health. The availability of these funding opportunities vary from year to year. To be considered for assistance as an entering student, it is only necessary to submit the Application for Admission to our Ph.D. program with supporting documents. Notification regarding financial aid is sent to recipients in March and April.

Stanford Graduate Fellowships

This prestigious, three-year University award is intended for outstanding candidates in graduate study leading to the Ph.D. The fellowship is selectively awarded to entering and current graduate students who are pursing (or plan to pursue) a PhD in Bioengineering. The award provides a quarterly stipend and tuition for 8-10 units per quarter for 12 quarters. The selection process is demanding, requiring nomination and confirmation by both department and university

committees.
