IELTs Practice I

With the pressures on today's young minds to succeed academically, some people believe that skipping class or playing hooky would make them less stressed, and suicide rates would drop immediately if school gives students the permission to skip class if they are willing to.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

The pressures from parents, teachers and the society in which all members play their individual roles have been the main source of problems from which teenagers are suffering. It has always been a greatly controversial idea to suggest schools open the policy of letting students skip class if they need to. A great number of variations of viewpoints exist. As far as I am concerned, I am in favor of the suggestion of skipping class if necessary.

Advocates suggest that as academic competition becomes increasingly fiercerthan ever, students fall victim to unnecessary stress which is likely to result in serious psychological problems. Suicide rates have remained unabatedly high, and related statistics and surveys demonstrate that one of the most evident contributing factors is stress. Therefore, schools are obliged to provide students with a stress-free environment in which they are able to acquire knowledge pleasantly.

Opponents, on the other hand, support a completely different point of view. They point out that skipping class is an extremely irresponsible behavior that

students must not do. They believe that students are supposed to comply with school rules all the time, even if these rules are unreasonable. However, the opponents ignored the fact that many students have lost their lives due to mounting pressure on them.

In conclusion, I believe if schools adopt the newly suggested theory of skippingclass at necessary times, academic pressure would decrease correspondingly. I am sure that this method would work very well if it is applied to every class immediately and appropriately. (255 words)

Some people think that using animals for experimentation purpose is cruel, but other people think that it is necessary for the development of science. Discuss both views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

A chimpanzee is perhaps the animal most closely related to humans; but instead of treating the animal with love and respect, we subject it to cruel and inhumane scientific and medical experiments to further human development. What a cruel fate for the unfortunate chimpanzee. Or perhaps, in life as in the jungle it is survival of the fittest, and so, as the most intelligent animal we are just exercising our right to dominate and use other animals as we wish.

For many people the issue of using animals for science is black and white; either very pro-animal rights, or very much in favor of using animals since we are the highest level creature. On the one hand, some people say that subjecting animals to pain and torture is truly barbaric; higher-level animals share with us feelings, thoughts and behaviors and so we should look after them and respect them. They may also feel that if we are so unsure about the effects of a drug for example then we should do further chemical testing before doing live and sometimes cruel animal testing.

Others, however, believe that we must use animals for the benefit of our own species (humans); to test drugs, cosmetics and new developments in science which will provide a safer and better lifestyle for us. Very few people are inherently cruel, but they still believe it is either them or us; it is better to test the drugs on a monkey rather than on a person.

Being cruel for the sake of being cruel and with no tangible results to show for it is definitely stepping over a boundary of acceptable behavior, but at other

times if the benefits of the research are explicit, tangible and valuable then I feel that the research is justified.

Motorized flight is the greatest invention in the history. No other inventions exerts greater impact. do you agree or disagree.

New scientific inventions have dramatically changed the way people live. Motorized flight is one of the key inventions in the history of technology. However, as far as I am concerned, the impact of motorized flight can be not considered the greatest among all inventions.

Apart from the motorized flight, other inventions have contributed enormously to our everyday life as well. Especially since the "industrial revolution" took place, our lives have been made much more convenient by inventions such as trains , computers and internet. Each invention has its different functions and works in different fields. As a result, it is hard to compare that which one exerts greater impact. Even a pair of chopsticks has impacted for almost 5000 years on the habit how people eat in China.

In addition, we should not only focus on the motorized flight itself to announce that it is the most important invention. Admittedly, it made the dream of human being become true, which people had been dreaming for so long to fly in the sky. From thunder and lightning to the electrical light, from the invention of the wheel to the car,and of course, without the invention of the screw; nail; hammer and motor, there will be no airplane.

In conclusion, the steps of inventing new products will never stop in our fast-developing society. Without suggesting all the inventions are equally good,

I think we should not ignore other small inventions as well, because every invention can be our friends and support our way of life.

(Pocket Money)

With the development of our modern society, people's living conditions become much more comfortable. But along with intense competition, parents have less time to consider children's needs in all-round. One method to solve this ontradiction is to give children some pocket money. Pocket money is useful to children. But whether the children are considerable enough to make correct use of these money. There are two viewpoints about the pocket money. Some people think that giving children pocket money will make them become luxurious. Others think that will not lead to such disadvantage. In my opinion, both of them are partially reasonable.

Someone believe that giving children pocket money really has many advantages. With pocket money, children can buy their daily necessities such as pencils, little toys, and snack food they like. It will give children a certain freedom to select what they want, make them aware rules of the equivalent exchange. Since time to parents is very precious, giving pocket money to children help them to save time spent in shopping, but used in busy working and earning money. Others insist that there are undoubtedly some disadvantages in spending pocket money. First, young children do not know how to use pocket money appropriately, they possibly consume all the money to buy expensive merchandise that they like, and then ask for extra money from their parents. Some parents cosset their children, and always give them a large amount of pocket money. Such conditions will make children become more and more prodigal. Second, since adults do not supervise the procedure of shopping, children could probably buy something that is not suitable for their age, such as adult magazines.

Judging these two viewpoints above-mentioned, I think that parents should give their children a limited amount of pocket money. There are some preconditions: the amount of pocket money must be finite; the parents should instruct their children how to use the money moderately and what is suitable to them; for a costly merchandise, parents themselves should take children to buy it. With these preconditions, pocket money will do no harm to their children.

My third year in the school……I studied Electronical Engineering with the focus on EMPS, which is Electronic Magnetism Pulses.

①I studied Electronical Engineering(主句,用于介绍总体概况)② with the focus on EMPS (with引导的结构,用于说明某方面的具体情况),③ which is Electronic Magnetism Pulses (Michael怕对方听不懂什么是EMPS,于是加上这个which引导的非限制性定语从句来做补充解释说明)

(A specific part needs to be emphasized)+非限制性定语从句(Additional Information)

(雅思口语) Are you a student or are you working now?

(3). 我主修International Trade.

I am a college student majoring in Business with the focus on International Trade, which I have always been interested in.

(雅思口语) Do you have any hobbies? What do you usually do in your spare time?

I love watching American TV series with the focus on exciting ones like <Prison Break> and <Heroes>, which are both enjoying great popularity among young people in China.

The government should do a lot to solve the existing problems with the focus on relieving traffic jam in cities, which, in my opinion, is the first nut to crack.

1. Cain (马徐骏老师) is particularly interested in __________ with the focus on __________, which is __________.

2. Akata (俞伟国老师) is extremely interested in __________ with the focus on __________, whom ___________.

3. Alan (俞鑫老师) is crazy for __________ with the focus on __________, who __________.

4. Mr. Chen Hao (陈豪老师) likes __________ with the focus on ____________, which __________.

1. Cain (马徐骏老师) is particularly interested in (studying literature) with the focus on (<金瓶梅>), which is (his all-time favorite)!

2. Akata (俞伟国老师) is extremely interested in (making friends with his

students) with the focus on (those very beautiful female students), whom (he always takes so much care of).

3. Alan (俞鑫老师) is crazy for (all kinds of sports) with the focus on (playing basketball with 徐淦), who (is one head shorter than him in height).

4. Mr. Chen Hao likes (watching movies) with the focus on ("exciting" movies like <色戒>), which always turns him on!
