Dear Sir or Madam:

It gives me great pleasure to recommend Mr. Shen, a dynamic and diligent young man for admission to your university as an elective student. I’m the counselor of the Student Affairs Office formedical students on the extended program track and the supervisor of Mr. Shen, who is now inhis fifth year of the eight-year-term medical program. Our frequent contact both in daily life and academic affairs during the past three yearshave allowedme to get to know Mr. Shen quite well.

I always meet Mr. Shen in the morning on my way to the office, when he has just finished swimming. Usually, this talkative young man would greet me cordially and share his latest ideas with me, either on the problems he encounters in his study or on the challenges of the medical system in China. In him, I see the qualities of a good doctor, including the compassion for the sick and the persistent love for medicine.Besides, Mr. Shen has a verypleasant temperament. His politeness, honesty, optimism and the willingness to share and cooperate with others make it very comfortable to get along with and also makes him well liked among his classmates.

Apart from his unique character, Mr. Shen was an impressive student in many ways. Having been the winner of many scholarships and awards and maintained a high GPA as an undergraduate student for the past five years, Mr. Shen is alsorecognized for leadership and responsibility and now serves as the president of the Graduate Student Union in the north campus of our university. One thing that impressed me most was the medical forumhe attempted to establishin our campus last year, which, at that time, was opposed by many of his colleagues owning to the shortage of both finances and human resources. It was his resolution and optimism that enabled him to find the sponsorship thatfinally made the program possible.

Mr. Shen will begin his internship in the affiliated hospital of our school 8 months from now. Meanwhile, many times he has expressed to me an interest in experiencing the medical education system and clinical practice of other countries for himself, for he has long aspired to broaden his vision on clinical medicine in an advanced medical system. I am sure that Mr. Shen, with his attentiveness, intelligence and inquisitiveness, would make the best of anopportunity to study at your institution. Again, I strongly recommend him for the position. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you would like further information.

Sincerely,

Counselor of XX Office of XXMedical School, XX

Dear Sir/Madam:

As a radiologist in theCancer Centre of XX University, I am pleased to write this recommendation letter for Mr. Shen in his application for admission to your elective program. I became acquainted with Mr. Shen in 2009, when he applied for the program of “Summer Students” as my student in our cancer center. From then on, he persisted in working as a member of our research group in the following three years. Thus, I feel that I can evaluate him very well in terms of personality and professional performance.

Mr. Shen is an effective leader among the summer students. He has a gift for getting along and cooperating with others and is a man of responsibility. Every time I arrange a task for him, he always delegates responsibility rationally to the group members according to their ability and efficiently finishes before the deadline. I remember that once we needed to update our database of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients and convert the Chinese 1992 cancer staging system into UICC staging system, which was time-consuming and challenging. To my surprise, Mr. Shen, together with his teammates, carried it off in two weeks. Moreover, their effort to make the database more structured and practical was demonstrated of great benefit to our later studies.

In recognition of his will and ability to conduct research, I assigned him to study the prognostic factors for NPC patients, an important part of our project. Since he was only in the third year of his 8-year medical program at that time, I was slightly nervous that this task was beyond him. However, my fears proved to be unfounded. Gaining the necessary expertise through conducting Internet research and consulting with members of other departments, he quickly mastered the basic skills needed to conduct the research thoroughly and meticulously. Finally, he presented me with a complete and well-written manuscript of his study.

A few weeks ago, Mr. Shen informed me of his intension to study in XX. I fully support his decision to pursue elective programs at your university and I believe this decision to study in XX will lead to new academic horizons and a broader vision for him. Therefore, I offer Mr. Shen my highest recommendations, and I would appreciate if you would give him your favorable consideration.

Sincerely,

XX M.D, PhD
