先介绍一下背景, 美国大学要求每位申请学生提交3封由授课老师写的官方推荐信。其中最好有一封是对比科目的老师(文科生找理科老师, 理科生找文科老师)。老师在填写推荐信的同时,还会对学生进行评估,比方说这个学生在老师所有所教过的学生中排名如何,这里有一个评估表格,下文会提到。而这3封推荐信理论上说是学生所看不到的,因此老师才放心说实话来保证申请的公正性。此外,学生也可以在这3封推荐信的基础上提交额外的推荐信。但是额外推荐信一般不太被看重,因为它们不走官方渠道,水分更多。

一、随着申请人数的增加,美国大学吹毛求疵的程度也随之增加。很多时候推荐信中的一句中性的话(注意:这还不是坏话)很有可能在众多赞美之词中脱颖而出,吸引招生官眼球并导致招生官将申请者的资料直接扔进垃圾桶(因此很多优秀的学生被拒都不知道什么回事)。二、美国大学讲究录取那些与学校的文化风格相吻合的学生,作为一个最真实最公正最客观的申请材料,老师的推荐信便是招生官了解这个学生性格最好的窗口。三、很多不方便自己说出口的东西如果能够在推荐信中说出来将事半功倍。这包括了你取得的那些惊天地泣鬼神的课外活动和成就,如果你自己不说而是从老师的口中说出来的话,在炫耀的同时又显得你谦虚低调。如果需要奖学金,老师在推荐信中提及一句你的家庭背景将会对你申请助学金有非常大的帮助(毕竟现在有太多不差钱的人因为种种原因申请奖学金了)。

这张表是每个帮你写官方推荐信的老师都必填的评估表。纵坐标为考察方向(大致翻译如下:学术成就,才智潜力,写作能力,创新思想,课堂讨论,其他老师的评价,纪律性工作习惯,成熟,动力,领导力,诚实,对挫折的反应,对他人的关心,自信,独立自主),横坐标则是你在老师心目中的位置(这一位置的参照物是和你同一届的所有学生)。也就是说美国大学的“考试”从你认识你高中老师的那一天起就开始了。因为根本不知道也看不到自己在老师心目中的排名是什么,所以只能尽可能选欣赏和了解自己的老师。同时也可以向该老师以前教过的学生了解这个老师评价学生的习惯。

但是也不要太紧张,不用刻意去表现,老师是看的出来的。但是相信知道这个表的存在以及它的考察方向对每位申请者都会有所帮助。至于应对方法,说到底还是“沟通”和“尊重”。

高中生活节奏很快,老师根本无暇顾及每一个人。那么责任就在你身上,要主动去和老师沟通,去update自己的课外生活。考试没考好,也尝试去和老师解释一下原因。平时上课积极发言,多和老师互动。班会课不要睡觉,多参与讨论,发表自己与众不同的观点对老师了解你有非常大的帮助。另外一点就是尊重,不单单是尊重老师,也要尊重同学。一些最基本的东西往往会给老师留下深刻的印象,见到老师主动问好,上课讨论的时候尊重其他同学的观点,上课睡觉和翘课尽量不要被老师抓到。就算被抓到,也要去和老师沟通,但是不

要越描越黑。

As his teacher of English at Shijiazhuang No. 2 Middle School, one of the key high schools in Hebei Province, I think I’m in the very position to offer my help in his application.
