Dear Visa Officer:

It’s my great honor that I’ve been admitted to the University of Toronto in the program of Social Science as a transfer student. (Although the offer letter didn’t mention the specific major, an email that sent from U of T later made sure of the program. The copy version of the email is enclosed with the Study Plan.) The program will begin on September 13th, 2010. And U of T marked me as “year:3” student.

A brief introduction of my background and my choice of sociology

My name is Yingchu Mao, born on June 1st, 1989, in Hangzhou, China. Currently, I am a sophomore of Wuhan University，majoring in Editing and Publishing Science. Last semester, I’ve got a chance to attend the AIESEC (one of the largest students’ organization around the world) Youth Leadership Conference in Wuhan. The conference focused on Non-governmental Organization topic with several excellent speeches made by Julie, Wei Zhang and Cong Du who worked in Wall Street for more than 10 years before he quitted and devoted himself to NGO-the Chiheng Foundation have left me a deep impression and arouse my intense interest on NGO.

What’s more, I happened to have applied for an internship in Xiaoshan Nanshi Community Center last summer vacation. And I found out that successfully running a NGO is everything but simple. You should be well equipped with a strong knowledge background in social science. I feel I’ve got that passion to study this issue. Meanwhile, I was attending a sociology-related course which I found social science a magical field using a variety of unique methods and skills exploring individual and collective ways of thinking, feeling and acting.

Since going abroad to study the advanced knowledge is what I always have in mind, I started to browse some famous universities’ websites and finally made a decision to abandon the major I’m not interested and to transfer to Canada given Chinese social science is still in the beginning stage and many theories are introduced from western countries.

My Choice of University of Toronto in Canada

First, Canada is a peaceful, beautiful and harmonious country which means two things to me. First it means that the country can provide the international students the high-quality education at lower expenses relative to UK and US. And second, those features just well show the sociology theories are closely combined with the practice within this country. Besides, Canada’s social science is covering more and more topics and the level of specialization is high, which indicates the highly development of the discipline.

Second, University of Toronto is ranked one of the world’s best universities with a long history. UT was established in 1827, one of the oldest universities around North America. The richness embedded in its history nurtures the ground for studying humanities disciplines. Matter of fact, UT has a strong academic background of those social science subjects. And UT’s Sociology classes discussed a wide range of social issues which fit my interest a lot and will be quite useful in NGO operation.

Plans to achieve my academic goal

First, because I applied as a transfer student, I must try my best to catch up with the regular students there. So I keep practicing English every day, trying to read some original novels and monographs. Only in this way can I conquer the language barrier as soon as possible when I start my study in UT.

Then although I’m a transfer student who can receive transfer credits to reduce the length of completing the program, I know my current major is not similar with sociology, so that means I have to work harder and take some first and second level courses to make up the missing credits. If possible I will make use of the summer vacation to take some courses.

Simultaneously, I know that the practice related with the program will include some field research. I wish that I can catch the chance to visit some NGOs in Canada, and write some reports about their operation patterns in order to learn the advanced modes.

Career opportunity in China

Upon my graduation in U of T, I plan to return to China for the following reasons:

Firstly, my training in sociology will provide skills for jobs in many fields in China, including government, politics, industry, education, journalism and so on. So there are many job opportunities lying ahead of me. But I am particularly interested in working at NGOs. There are more and more NGOs established in China, such as Chiheng, Narada, Greenpeace(China) and Action Aid(China). However they just need some more advanced ideas and talents to support the institution. With a degree from world-famous university and my skill in thinking and research that I’ve been taught when I study in UT, I am confident that I can find a place in Chinese NGO that fit me the best.

Secondly, sociology is about the way of thinking and acting which is penetrated into the local culture. I was born and living here, so it will be more confident and comfortable for me to apply the theory to Chinese conditions than any other countries.

Last but not the least, I wish to go back to my hometown Hangzhou, which is a metropolitan city with many great job opportunities and a very beautiful and comfortable city for living. Besides I love my parents very much. For I am the only child of them, I wish to go back and take good care of them.

The program of Accounting and Finance offered by Seneca College attracts me just like a bridge to a higher education. In this program, many important subjects are provided, such as Accounting

Basics,Business Statistics,Mathematics of Finance,Organizational Behaviour, Co-op Professional Theory, and Quantitative Approaches to Decision Making etc. As far as I’m concerned, those subject regarding accounting and finance are quite necessary to me. I can get a better understanding on accounting knowledge and get closer to a true accountant through them. What I have planned is that after a period of adaptive phase, I will go to a university for a degree and then one-year’s master. matter what, I want to pass CA (chartered accountant) exam during my study in Canada, and then back to China to apply myself into accounting and finance.（提到自己滴目标和打算，让人家感觉你是个很有计划有目标滴好孩子！！而且说了自己会回国）

My parents have sufficient money to supply me to study abroad and steady income. They are definitely willing and able to afford my education.（小提一下父母提供了资金~~） In fact, I’m an easily homesick girl. What’s more, I always put my family, my parents first. From the date of my birth, my parents spare most of their love, time and money on me. I’m so grateful for having such parents. However, my parents are not young and healthy as before any more. Going back to China and take good care of them after finishing my study is my responsibility.（说出父母滴原因~~~偶

必须回国） In additional, China’s governmental policy is more attractive to me. The government values the returned students more and more highly. With the development of China, large amounts of qualified people are in great demand. Accordingly, there are sufficient job

opportunities for returned students, and suitable conditions supplied for their personal and professional development. I believe that if I go back to China, I will have a brighter employment

应该说，偶滴SP也改了很多遍。。。一开始滴时候有将近两页捏。。。而且还弄了outline，写滴相当详细。。。后来经过不少人指点~~尤其一个在多college念硕士文凭滴哥哥给了最大滴帮助~~~他就是自己DIY~~而且只是个college~人家20多天就来体检表了。。。唉~~~其实偶米寄掉体检表滴话，也差不多挺快滴。。。

一些小建议

1，出去念书，以及去这个学校念书，要说出你自己滴意愿！！你自己滴原因。。千万别说你父母希望你出去。。你父母感觉怎么样。。。而且我觉滴，说自己从小梦想出国也挺牵强。。。 2，SP一定要拒绝模板~~~每个人滴情况各有不同！！而且你需要SP去体现你自己滴想法~~

坚决不要雷同！！雷同卷万一碰上了那就是咔嚓了~~

3，SP不是要求你写作文~~华丽滴句子，优美滴词藻~~这些都不是必须滴。花里胡哨滴。。。

你只要说得明白，讲得清楚，说得让人信服~~那就是王道！！！

4，SP最好是一页纸，不要多了，但也不能少，400词左右。。。偶写滴就有点多，，，虽

然也是一页但是500多字了。。。

在申请留学及签证的过程中，经常会被要求写学习计划书（study plan）,本文作者长期从事留学文书写作，因此结合自己的工作经验，介绍一下学习计划书的写作。

一般来说学习计划书可以按照提交目的分成两类，给大使馆申请签证用的，或是给学校申请录取用的。用来申请学校的学习计划从本质上讲和个人陈述是同一类型的文书，关于学校申请类的学习计划书可以参考个人陈述方面的文章，本文主要介绍提交大使馆签证用的学习计划书。

欧美国家，特别是移民国家，如法国，澳大利亚，新西兰，加拿大等国针对留学生签证的时候往往要求提供学习计划书，通过学习计划书使签证官了解您的背景，选择留学专业的动机条件，选择该国留学的理由，和清晰的未来留学时间安排，职业目标和回国理由，配合审核您的其它材料决定是否给您发放留学签证，因此学习计划书是一份很关键的文件。

总的来说，学习计划书需要包括以下几方面内容。

1、 简单说明自己的学习经历，专业背景及工作经历；

2、 说明自己进一步求学的动机及为什么选择该国、该大学与该专业；

3、 详细的留学时间安排；

4、介绍留学所需资金及来源；

5、 对未来职业目标的阐述，留学后回国的理由。

学习计划书的行文风格和文章结构与个人陈述有很大不同，不需要太多个性化和感性的描述，而应该是结构清晰简单，逻辑严密，阐述的事实明确，相关论据有力可信，学成回国的理由要非常充分，并且绝对不能和申请人的其他材料发生矛盾。

由于使馆的工作人员每天要处理大量的文件，因此学习计划书切不可写的太长，一般不应超过800字，并且说明一个问题最好只用一个段落，段落前加上标题，如 My Choice of University of Toronto in Canada ,My career objective 等，以便使馆的工作人员对您一段内容的中心思想一目了然。您的阐述应该非常清晰易读，不能希望让使馆的工作人员从您的文字中“挖掘”您“潜在”内容。

My training was in the area of Chinese Education in XXX University for

Nationalities. The education I received there trained my basic abilities of learning and made me capable of independent working. Because of my interest,and curiosity in the new field of Marketing,I participated in the business directly related with market after my graduation from university.

My first job was Manager Assistant in XXX Supermarket. I learned a lot of experience from manager and co-workers, which added to my talent and efforts made me very successful in daily work. For example, I made our supermarket the "Supermarket

I knew the information about ST.ANDREW'S CAMBRIDGE in Beijing International Education Fair. The present study plan is based on much serious thinking that I have been carrying on recently and I believe only a well-considered study plan is likely to provide me with effective guidelines for my future studies in Canada and for my subsequent career development in China.

1. Why do you wish to come to Canada to study at the school and in the program for which you have been accepted?

Having developed the necessary theoretical buildup and research skills through my undergraduate program in life science, I consider myself qualified for a

challenging graduate program at Canada’s University of x x x . I choose this school for a number of reasons. I believe that the best way to learn is to learn from the best and University of x x x is a world famous institution of a 200-year history, whose 6 professors and alumni have become Nobel laureates. Its unparalleled academic strength is evidenced by its large number of internationally renowned scholars and outstanding graduates, and the research achievements it has made. With its rich cultural diversity and pluralistic value orientations, it is uniquely hospital to international students from over 140 countries. I want to study life science there because the university is particularly strong in this program, with advanced facilities, abundant research funds, and outstanding researchers. The sheer bulk of research papers published in the world’s first-rate journals by life scientists

there testifies to its leading role in the academic community in Canada and even in the world. My potential advisor Prof. x x x, a distinguished scientist in cellular and developmental biology, has been performing some very pioneering research, part of which closely corresponds to the research I have been doing. I have read his voluminous publications and wish to enter his laboratory. He will provide me with full financial support during my study and research there.

2. What is your overall educational goal?

During the future two years, under the guidance of Prof. x x x, I wish to complete my Master’s program successfully, obtaining my Master’s diploma / degree. Through this program, I expect to be instructed in advanced research techniques and

methodologies in cellular and developmental biology, expose myself to the latest developments in the international academia, and develop my capacity for independent research. In this way, I will have a solid foundation for becoming a successful biological researcher who can undertake high-level research upon completing my program and returning to China.

3. Why you are not pursuing less expensive alternatives in China (what are those alternatives and have you investigated them?)

It is true that less expensive graduate education is also available in China. I have visited most of the leading institutions (like Chinese Academy of Sciences) and universities in Beijing, including my alma mater. Laboratories enjoy greater input of state research funds and better facilities in recent years. However, the level of research as a whole remains relatively low. The limited number of facilities has prevented graduate students from remarkably enhancing their hands-on abilities and realizing their research objectives. In China, the latest information of biological research in the international academia is more difficult to acquire while academic exchanges are insufficient. The greatest fault I find is that an advisor usually supervises about a dozen of graduate students, allowing for little

advisor-student interactivity. Those adverse factors are deeply rooted in China’s educational system and are unlikely to be solved within a short time. Finally, all the accomplished biologists in China have invariably been trained in the west. I want follow their footsteps and I believe that Canadian graduate education is more expensive for good reasons.

4. What ties do you have to China that will lead you to return to China following your course of study?

With the increasing emphasis on biological research by the Chinese government, all the research achievements made by Chinese biological scientists are highly respected. Such a favorable environment on the government’s policy level guarantees that returnees from the west will be accorded the best conditions for their personal

and professional development. Specifically, several ties will lead me to return to China following my course of study. First I can enter the Institute of Cell Biology of Beijing Normal University where I completed my undergraduate thesis to work as research. During the second half of my undergraduate program and over the past one year since my graduation, I have been working as research assistant in the project team Genetic Expression and its Effect on the Cell Cycle sponsored by the State Natural Science Foundation and the team director has also promised me a research position there. Beyond that, I can apply for job positions at many research

institutes in Beijing and at so many multinational corporations based in China, which are engaged in biological-pharmaceutical research and development. The job opportunities are virtually limitless.

5. How will this Canadian diploma/degree increase your chances in the Chinese labor market?

China’s burgeoning development in biology is accompanied by a woeful lack of internationally trained talents. What ties do I have to China that will lead me to return to China following my course of study?

I hold plans regarding how I aim to use my degree in the long-term when I return to China, and have already secured backing from family and colleagues to facilitate their realization. Those plans include using my research findings to establish my own robotics high technology company, with the help of my father and a professor at x x x University. My father is an official with extensive connections, and he is in a position to provide his full support in R & D financing and market development. Through him, I can navigate my way through red tape and meet the people with the knowledge regarding potential business. With regard to the professor, he is my former

advisor and my current employer, so we know each other well and have a proven fruitful relationship. He has a track record of completing many successful projects for Chinese enterprises, such as the x x x Construction Machinery Group and the x x x Group, and maintains close ties with them, so the likelihood is our reputation will bring good clients. I plan to complete UTP Stage 2 in Business Administration within 1 year. During this time, I will make a firm foundation for the next undergraduate programs, and also improve my English to adapt to western education. After 1 year I could enter Simon Fraser University to study in financial courses with a full year of transfer credit earned. This is the most efficient way I can think about.

The educational fund my parents prepared for me, is sufficient to afford both my studying and living expenses. If I have any further requirements in Canada, they are willing to take any extra charges.
