Letter (A Letter of Apology)

Dear Prof. Wang,

First of all, please allow me to express my deep sorry for not being able to keep our appointment. I do know that this is very impolite and must have caused you much trouble.

I do reckon that at present any explanation is pale and futile. However I do not want you to misunderstand me. On my way to your office, an old lady suddenly fainted due to heart attack on the bus. I stopped a taxi and sent her into a nearby hospital. I stayed there until her son came, which spoiled our appointment.

I am aware that our appointment is of importance. I do hope that you would be kind enough to spare your valuable to meet me.

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely Yours

Population

Progress in science and the improvement of living conditions have led the rapid growth of the world population. Modern medical science, for example, has made it possible for babies to grow up healthily and for people to live longer. With improved living conditions, particularly in the countryside, people tend to have larger families. As a result, the world population has increased so rapidly that it has now exceeded 5 billion.

But the overgrowth of population presents a threat to the existence of human society. A large population demands a great deal of food supply and shelter space. However, the limited productivity and scarce natural resources can hardly meet the needs of the ever-Increasing population. Thus in the long run, the overgrowth of the world population will only harm mankind.

To guarantee the steady development of human society, mankind must realize the consequences resulting from a fast population growth and the importance of carrying out a family planning programme. Only by adopting effectual measures can human society develop steadily and have a bright future.

Internet The Internet seems to have become an indispensable part in modern lire. This is because the Internet has a lot of advantages. To begin with, the Internet provides people with enormous amounts of information in a fraction of a second. With this easy access to the Internet, searching for information has become easier than ever before. Besides, the Internet changes the way people communicate with each other. E mail allows us to write to our friends and receive letters from our friends cheaply and instantly. Furthermore, the Internet has revolutionized business. E-commerce enables people to do business and go shopping at home easily and conveniently. Finally, the Internet plays an important role in mass education.

However, the Internet also has some unfavorable aspects. Cyber-crime causes a great loss in people’s property. Computer viruses bring us lots of trouble. Trash mail is always a nuisance to everyone. Worst of all, pornography may corrupt people, especially young people.

In a word, the Internet has both merits and demerits. But on the whole, it brings people more benefits than harm. It is suggested that a clever use be made of this modern technique for the benefit of all people.

Traditional festival

As society develops, many people in China, especially young people, celebrate more and more foreign festivals instead of our traditional festivals. They believe it is cool and fashionable. At the same time, they consider celebrating China’s festivals as out-dated.

I don’t think this is good for younger generations or for our country. Firstly, traditional festivals are an important part of China’s cultural heritage. They are unique and are precious treasures from our ancestors. If we don’t keep them, we will lose our own cultural characteristics. Secondly, our traditional festivals are, in fact, just as cool as a lot of foreign festivals. As our country becomes stronger, the world will learn much more about our culture and our festivals, just like our language becomes more and more popular in other countries.

In conclusion, I think it’s all right to receive some foreign cultures, but we should not ignore our own traditional festivals. We should learn more about them. As the Beijing Olympics approaches, we can introduce our festivals to our foreign friends! Success

Some people say the key to success is the luck, while others claim it is hard work. As far as I am concerned, there are many factors contributing to success and the three fundamental ones are diligence, devotion and perseverance.

Diligence is the first key factor to success. Diligence helps us remove ignorance, overcome difficulties, and enlighten our minds. It makes a fool wise, and a poor man rich. Devotion is another factor to success. Whatever we do, we must love it and do it whole-heartedly. Only when we set our minds on the job, can we do it well. Furthermore, perseverance, or a strong will, is the last key to success. Without a strong will, we are likely to give up when we meet some difficulties, let alone perform wonderful deeds.

To conclude, all great men achieve success through diligence, devotion and perseverance. Just as the famous saying goes, "No pains, no gains", "Where there is a will, there is a way."

Earthquake

Since earthquake may cause great destructions, we need to learn how to detect them quickly. Animals always give us warnings. For example, before an earthquake hens would not enter their cages; rats run out from their hiding places and march fearlessly through houses; even normally quiet dogs bark in chorus all over town. Pigeons are especially noisy and fly in unusual patterns. And most noticeable is in a chemical change in ground water before a quake.

To prevent destruction of property, the architects design columns and horizontal beams of equal strength. Besides the efforts to improve building structures, people also should prepare their houses for the possibility of a great earthquake. It is advisable to check and reinforce their homes regularly. And remember to place heavy objects in low positions, attach cupboards and cabinets to walls, and the like .All these precautions can make a great difference in saving lives and preventing the loss of homes.

Plagiarism

Nowadays, there is more and more case of plagiarism in Chinese colleges. Why do those people, even some famous professors copy the theses? Maybe the reason can be listed as follows. The first one is that so many colleges consider the number of theses to be very important. Besides, the development of Internet makes it easy to get others' theses.

As a result, common people lose confidence in those scholars. For instance, several months ago a report says the total number of Chinese theses is ranked the second in the world, but too many people don't believe the quality of those theses.

It is high time that something were done about this problem. On the one hand, colleges shouldn't assess someone solely by the number of his/her theses. The quality is more important. On the other hand, we should strengthen morality education, helping more people know more clearly that honesty is a Chinese traditional virtue. All these measures will certainly reduce the number of academic plagiarism

Food security

Over the past couple of years, several cases of the food scandal have been disclosed on various media. The problem of food security has become a hot button across society. The prevalence of food insecurity has greatly impacted public health, which the government could not afford to ignore, according to the online edition of the People Daily.

There are a couple of driving forces, I would argue, behind this undesirable tide. First, in the course of the rapid economic evolution, we ignore moral education, giving rise to the rising rate of the problem. More importantly, the lack of adequate regulation and punishment on those illegal producers enforces the trend.

As Confucius instructed, it is better late than never. Prompt and strict measures should be taken to turn back this evil trend. The government should launch a massive moral campaign to educate all citizens and draw up tougher laws to crack down on those irresponsible corporations and prohibit them from entering the food industry again. I am firmly convinced that through our combined efforts we are bound to enjoy more risk-free foods in the days ahead.

Traffic jam

There is no doubt that traffic congestion becomes a growing worry for the residents of most urban areas. Some major roads are regularly choked with traffic in rush hours. The limited transport capacity contributes largely to the vexing problem. How to solve the headache? The existing solutions to traffic jam mainly aims at creating metro bus systems and broadening major roads. Widening the existing roads can solve traffic snarls on some level. Soaring car ownership compounds the chronic annoying problem, so we must sharply reduce the heavy reliance on cars and drive a shift to the mass transportation. It is a cheap and good way. We can create a system of customized bus routes and highlight the development of subways, trolleys and light rail. The effective combination of these solutions will enable the urban areas to possess a smooth traffic.
