One of these was Frankson’s success in improving working conditions in the local factories. This success was the direct result of a newspaper campaign which he organized and financed. The improvement was also brought about by a series of special meetings which Frankson arranged between the employers and the workers.

A second factor in Frankson’s rise was his ability to speak well at public meetings. This was partly ____(because, due to) his training in a drama school when he was young. Also, he had worked as a journalist for part of his life. As a result of this experience, during which he had met a wide range of people, he became expert at

finding the right themes to hold the attention of large audiences.

He was able to discuss topics ranging from industrial relations to foreign policy. As a consequence of this work, he could depend on the votes of a majority of the female electorate in Clum. Lastly, the support of his friends in national government contributed to his success at provincial level. Thus it can be seen that Frankson possessed both the personal qualities and the political background to

become a popular leader.
