we're from different worlds, yet we somehow fit together. Love is what binds us, through fair or stormy weather. I stand before you now with only one agenda:"to let you know my heart is yours.

Okay, the key to being a good dad? Sometimes things work out just the way you want. Sometimes they don't. You gotta hang in there. Because when all is said and done,90% of being a dad is just showing up.

We do strange things for the people we love. We lie to them, we lie for them. There may be some bumps along the way, but we never stop waiting the best for them. That’s what makes it such a tough job. Kind of the best job in the world.

We tell our kids it doesn’t matter if you win or lose. But let’s be honest, winning feels pretty great. There’s nothing like that golden moment in the sun. I think every parent probably wants that for their child, and maybe a little bit for ourselves too. Sometimes we push too hard, and that leads to a lot of resentment and guilt. So, how much is too much? Here’s where I come out: Guilt fades. Hardware is forever.

We talk a lot about tradition this time of year. But as much as we love our traditions, Sometimes our best memories come from the times that are the most untraditional.

Whether it’s for themselves or for the people they love, yeah,15%, sometimes that’s just enough.

At that moment all I wanted was to be with my family. But of course, that meant finding a way to apologize to the people that I had belittled and rejected. They could have been petty. They really could have made me pay, but they didn’t. Never loved them more.

Everybody’s afraid of something, right? Heights, clowns, tight spaces. Those are things you get over. But then there’s our children. Will they fit in? Will they be safe? Those are fears you never get past. So sometimes all you can do is take a deep breath, pull’em close and hope for the best.

Monica: (into phone) Pants and a sweater? Why, mom? Who am I gonna meet in a blackout? Power company guys? Eligible looters? Could we talk about this later? OK. (hangs up)

Phoebe: Can I borrow the phone? I want to call my apartment and check on my grandma. (to Monica) What's my number? (Monica and Rachel look at Phoebe strangely.)

Phoebe: Well, I never call me.

讲解

看到Monica挂了电话,Phoebe赶忙过去说:can I borrow the phone?(能借电话用一下吗?)当然这句话也可以说成:can I use the phone?

I wonder if you’d mind if I used your telephone?(电话可以借我用一下吗?)或Could I possibly use your telephone?(我可以用您的电话吗?)或Would you mind if I used your telephone?(您介意我使用您的电话吗?)

Certainly,it's right there in the kitchen.(当然,电话就在厨房里。) Of course,it's no problem at all.(当然,请用。)

Not at all. You're welcome to use it as long as you like.(不介意,您愿打多久就打多久。

Surc.It's right here.(当然,在这里,请用吧。)

Of course.Be mv guest. Sure,go ahcad.(没问题,用吧。)

I’m afraid I can’t lct you use it just now-because I’m expccting a very important call from New York.(很抱歉,我正在等一个纽约来的相当重要的电话。)

I’m sorry.but I’m afraid nlv son is on the line in his bedroom right now.(很抱歉,我儿子正在他的卧室用电话。) Sorry.but it's being used by my son in his bedroona.(抱歉,我儿子正在卧室里用电话。)

Rachel

Phoebe: Oh, poor little Tooty is scared to death. We should find his owner.

Ross: Why don't we just put 'poor little Tooty' out in the hall?

Rachel: During a blackout? He'd get trampled!

Ross: (nonchalantly) Yeah?

Oh,poor little Tooty is scared to death.(可怜的小Tooty被吓得要命。)

I’m tickled to dcath that my essay won the prize. I hate history,it bores me to death. You know Friends is really funny.I laugh myseclf to death whenever I cnjoy it.

其他的表达方式还有work to death(拼命工作)、be frightened to death (吓得要死)、be sick to dcath of sb./sth.(厌烦透了某人或某物)、be worried to dcath(担心得要命)、bc embarrassed to death(羞愧得要死)等等。

Our cat is death on rats.(我们家的猫是抓耗子的好手。)

Be careful when you play tennis with Lee.He's death on bascline shots.(你跟Lee打网球的时候千万小心,他特别善于抽底线球。)be death on也可以表示A对B特别有效,比如:This powder is death on cockroaches.

My grandfather is death on smoking. Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying,“The one I shall kiss is the man;scizc him and lead him away safely.”And when hc came, he went up to him at once, and said,“Master!”And he kissed him.(出卖耶酥的人曾给他们一个暗号,说:“我亲谁,谁就是;你们把他拿下,牢牢靠靠地带走。” It was foolish of him to go jogging so soon after his operation. That was the kiss of death.(他太愚蠢了,刚做完手术就去练跑步,结果把命也搭上了。)

He's a powerful man n this company.A bad report from him is the kiss of death.(在这个公司里,也是一个实权人物,只要他打一个对你不利的报告你就完蛋啦。)

Age fifty-five in most Ammican companies is the kiss of death.

If you ever hope to rise in this company, stay away from that guy.

She caught her death,can't come today.(她得了重感冒,今儿来不了了)。 朋友回答:As sure as death.(千真万确)。

Paolo

Rachel: (entering with Paolo, arm in arm) Everybody, this is Paolo. Paolo, I want you to meet my friends. This is Monica. Monica: (smitten) Hi!

Rachel: And Joey....

Monica: Hi!

Rachel: And Ross.

Monica: Hi!

Paolo: (something in Italian)

Everybody, this is Paolo.Paolo,I want you to meet my friends. This is Monica.(各位,这是Paolo。

I'd like you to meet my lover,Ichiro.lover的意思虽然也是“恋人”,但它通常指的是关系已达到很深地步的爱人,更不能让人接受的是lover还有“情夫”的意思。

Look,here's John!John-Tom,Tom-John.

Ey the way,do you know each other?

Mr.Lynd,I want you to meet Mr.Naomi Service, dircctor of Cambex Research Institute.

Allow me to introduce

Mrs.fenny Sampson,Chairman of World Wild Lifc.(请允许我介绍世界野生动物协会主席,Jenny Sampson太太。)

再如:It is with great pleasure that I introduce to you Mr.Stanley Young,Assistant

Manager of General Electric.(我很高兴向诸位介绍通用电器公司副经理,Stanley Young先生。) Please let me introducc President of the Sino-American

Grant

你也可以说:Nice to meet you.(见到你很高兴。)或Good to meet you.(很高兴认识你。) I'm very happy to meet you.(很高兴认识你。)或It's a pleasure to meet you.(认识你很高兴。)或I’ve been looking forward to meeting you.(我一直期待着与你见面。)

I ask that you teach me a lot. Would you please look favorably on me? I'm very happy to meet you.
