The film review of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

At the end of the film The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, little Tom has already defeated his own fear of the American Indian Joe and seemed to have retrieved his naughty nature. At the county party, the boy who was hit by Tom’s cream cake bomb came to Aunt Poly to find some help, only to find that neither he nor she could do anything.

The final scene, I assume, showed at least two precious points which could be described as glittering diamonds featured in almost all the compositions of Mark Twain. One is the humor deeply embedded in his works, the other is the sarcastic way the leading character, Tom Sawyer, adopted to evaluate all things around. Some people say The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is just one of the plain novels written by the famous author, others ,so much so that, misinterpret it into a children’s book simply aiming at the energetic kids who are always dreaming of becoming a hero. Although these two opinions undoubtedly make sense under certain situations, I strongly promote my point of view that the story is more a fairy tale for adults than a small hero’s adventure.

I would like to use three incidents to further explain my findings.

The first one is Tom’s success in letting his friends take on his tedious punishment and pay him properties such as copper doorknocker and beautiful feather automatically to ensure the ownership of the glorious task ordered by captious aunt Poly. And after they had finished, he bribed the small black slave and messed himself up meticulously so that aunt Poly could not recognize his trick. It shows that Tom is experienced in taking advantage of the resources within his reach. Tom’s deeds of this kind can be sort up into a category called “cheating”, and a matured person who committed this behavior could be regard as criminal, so the key reasons for which his actions could be tolerated by the adults is that he is a kid from a rather rich family, and all the faults could be simply embraced as childish “mischief”!

The second is the venture after Tom and Huck witnessed the murder case. During the period,Tom told his fellows that he was fascinated by the heroic life of pirates and announced his strong determination to be a successful pirate. There, I would like to summarize the philosophy of a common pirate as “profit by other people's toil”. Taking Tom’s routine into consideration, he is truly walking towards his goal! At the end of this adventure, he finally found out that he probably could not be a pirate living in the solitary island with a lonely ship and stopped dreaming of it. However, once he returned, he continued teasing his peers for fun, utilizing his tricks to skim more benefits from others. Were these kinds of actions unmoral?

Then, last but not least, is the treasure cave that had seen the battle between Joe and Tom. Eventually, there buried the Indian Joe as well. The different reaction Beggy and Tom gave upon Joe’s death can also account for my assertion. The writer had imposed too much of his own desire onto a country boy’s back, so the boy in this novel appears to be more adult-like than his counterparts. After a careful and thorough retrospect of the film, the strongest impression I can easily gain is that it is Tom’s luck rather than his industrious work that contribute to his great accomplishment. To sum up, there is no adventure but a lucky dog’s romance in the whole story.

I strongly recommend the perception that all the books are generally a reflection of the author’s thoughts in their deepest mind. Anyway, Mark Twain is an American writer

living in the “Golden Age” after World War Two, when the money worship and stories advocating “small potatoes climb up the social ladder by somehow” are swelling and boasting. The writer himself started a business at his forties with the hope of making a fortune, but due to his lack of commercial skill and social experience, seven years later ,his continual investment were all gone and his partner was proved to be a fraud. So, I’d like to see this “children’s book “as a fairy tale written for those frustrated adults to comfort them, and, by the way to place enlightenment of capitalism plus “American Dream” in children’s heart.
