Knowledge Changes Females’ Fate

——After reading Xiao Xiao

2012级英语6班 20124031050 易津言

Xiao xiao is a book which written at the main line that the heroine, only twelve, Xiao xiao married for child bride. The whole passage was filled with savage conventions that requested a lot at females. After reading these clear, bright, soft words, a depression last for a long time in my heart. That’s a kind of sorrow for destiny of women in old age. Xiao xiao was an orphan and was entrusted to the care of her uncle who earned his living by farming. She married a three-year-old child as child bride when she was twelve. Xiao xiao, a twelve girl who should be under the care of her parents and enjoy her childhood, was asked to marry early because of those bad conventions and her husband was still a weaned child! What a ridiculous things! But it was a such common thing at that age. Her everyday life was filled with working and taking care of her so called brother husband. When she began to know the matter of men and women at her fifteen, she was seduced by Hua gou and pregnant. But Hua gou ran away at last and everyone was shamed of her destructive behavior and decided to send her away. But is all of it really the fault of Xiao xiao? Obviously not! Although it is the longing for love that let her taste the forbidden fruit, but the direct reason should be those bad conventions. Xiao xiao was not wrong. Others were not wrong, neither. It

was the fault of bad conventions that rooted in people’s mind for

thousands of years. They resulted in the sufferings of Xiao xiao. That’s what we called destiny.

The word “schoolgirl” was mentioned in the passage for many times. Although the grandfather and villagers contorted the meaning of

schoolgirl and made the word sound horrible and unendurable, Xiao xiao was more and more yearning for it. Because Hua gou told her it meant of freedom. And that was the common yearning for women in old age. The end of the story seemed to be perfectly happy in Shen congwen’s words, but made me feel chilling. “Xiao xiao’s son married also at his twelve and his wife was six years older than him. The wife was old enough to help with housework……and all of it was just like twelve

years ago when Xiao xiao married her husband.” Through these words, as if I see innumerable girls named Xiao xiao living in the endless darkness. Those words are not so much an ending, but a beginning of a new tragedy, an infinite loop of tragedy.

Actually in my opinion, all the tragedy and destiny can be changed by ourselves. As the passage mentioned, schoolgirl represented freedom, modern, knowledge, and a different life. Although everyone regarded it as a nightmare or something bad, Xiao xiao was still looking forward to it. They are modern ladies. The existence of them had a great impact on people’s feudal thoughts. Those men were afraid of women’s change.

These may change their absolutely leading position in the family or even in the society. That’s why they rumored and made girls reject schoolgirls. Buddhist thinks that a flower is one world, which means where there is a flower, there is a fruit. That’s causal. So I have a question for all of you: what dominates our life? Is it fate? Of course not! Maybe the god

arranged our beginning, but which road to go forward and which position to achieve depends on ourselves. The famous director, Zhang yimou once said: “No matter the world’s famous scientist, artist, or an ordinary people, it is knowledge that changes their life.”

A knowledgeable people can change his own destiny, a group of

knowledgeable people can change the fate of the country and the age. If there was not “May 4th” Enlightenment, how can china be what he is today? If there was not New Culture Movement, how can we talk about the rise of Chinese? It is knowledge that lets Golgi gripped the throat of fate; it is knowledge that makes Edison walk out from slums into

Manhattan; it is knowledge that lets Hawking in wheelchair became the pride of the whole world! The female today go out of home, competing with males to display their wonderful life, and showing the complete and true ego. So the females today need more knowledge to improve and enrich ego. Knowledge can tidy up females’ psychology. That means females’ mental health, confidence and independence comes from knowledge.

As the saying goes, “A poor man must have a hateful place.” Xiao xiao is a poor girl in our mind and her hateful place is her lack of knowledge. Let us suppose that the heroine Xiao xiao accepted a good education and obtained a lot of knowledge, will her life be quite different? Of course! If she were born in a wealthier family, she might be happily studying in the school at her twelve; if she didn’t lose her parent so early, her arranged marriage may had a better object; if she had more knowledge, she might achieve the paradise that filled of freedom, democracy, equality…… As a matter of fact, it’s unfair for her that we judge that she was happy or not. Maybe she is not so unfortunate as we think, for how she was living was not a bad result in that age.

No matter Xiao xiao is fortunate or not, it has nothing to do with us. Why the author wrote it down is to make us think about it and learn something from it to avoid becoming another Xiao xiao in this present age. Now the 21st century provides us with democracy, equality and

freedom, we females should have the consciousness to study and acquire more knowledge to improve and enrich ego.

In a word, knowledge can change females’ fate. That’s what I learned from the little novel Xiao xiao.
