如一进课堂我说:“It’s nice to see you again. How are you today?”星期一上课问:“Did you have a good time in the weekend?”

Katherine Commale was five years old when she learned that malaria (疟疾) kills a child in Africa every 45 seconds. She also learned that people can avoid getting malaria by sleeping under a special net. The bed nets keep out the mosquitoes that carry the disease. The cost of a bed net is 10 dollars. That may not seem like a lot of money. But many of the people who need nets the most survive on less than one dollar a day.

“It made me sad to learn about all those children dying.” Katherine says. “ I wanted to raise money to buy nets for African children.”

Katherine thought the members of her family might want to help. She and her younger brother used a pizza box to make a diorama (立体模型) showing an African family asleep in a nut. Katherine used a plastic insect to show church members how easy it is for mosquito to bite

unprotected people. Then she spread a net over the family, protecting them from the mosquito.

Katherine also wrote a skit (短剧) in which kids from the audience pretended to be sleeping. Some under nets, some unprotected. Another child pretended to be a mosquito moving among the children. The skit showed how easily children without a protective net could be bitten and catch malaria. After they saw the presentation, many church members donated money.

Katherine sent the money to Nothing But Nets, a program that sends bed nets to Africa. Soon after that, she had another idea. She decided to create gift certificate to sell for the Christmas holiday. Each 10-dollar certificate carried a message explaining that a lifesaving bed net had been purchased in honor of the recipient(接收者).

“My brother and some friends helped me decorate the gift certificates,” says Katherine. When more certificate orders came in, Katherine got help from classes in local schools.

Katherine is 11 years old now, and she has helped to raise more than $200,000 for Nothing But Nets. In 2009, Katherine was invited to a White House ceremony held on World Malaria Day. She was honored with the Dragonfly Award for her devotion to ending the disease. 61. According to the text, malaria __________. A. is not preventable

Each year, about 10,000 to 100,000 animal species die off. They join the countless species that have gone extinct over the course of Earth’s history----and extinction means forever. At least it used to. Scientists are now closing in on the ability (逐渐接近)to bring back extinct species. No, this doesn’t mean the plot of Jurassic Park is going to become a reality. Researchers need DNA to bring back a species. DNA is the chemical that carries the structure for a living thing. Dinosaurs have been gone too long for any of their DNA to remain in fossils (化石).

But there’s a very real chance that we will be able to bring back more recently extinct species. This could even include Ice Age animals like the woolly mammoth (毛象). In 2003, a team of Spanish and French scientists re-created the Pyrenean ibex, which had gone extinct three years earlier. The new animal didn’t survive long, but scientific advances should improve the success rate. In January, Australian scientist announced that they were on their way to bringing back another kind of frogs.

That we can bring species back doesn’t mean that we should. There may be benefits to reviving a species. But there’s no way to know how it will turn out. For example, would a passenger pigeon fit into its old habitat?Or might it crowd out existing species?

Environmentalists worry that our ability to bring species back might cut down support for the

hard work of traditional conservation. Why worry about preserving a wildlife habitat or fighting poachers (偷猎者) if we know we can just make up for our mistakes?

But those extinctions are our mistakes to correct, which may give us an obligation (义务) to do so. As businessman and environmentalist Steward Brand recently said, “Humans have made a huge hole in nature. We have the ability now to repair some of that damage.”

We would do well to remember the lesson of Jurassic Park: Proceed (前进) with caution. 66. Why is the plot of Jurassic Park not going to become a reality? A. Because dinosaurs are forbidden to be brought back to life.

B. Because it is impossible to find DNA of dinosaurs in fossils. C. Because scientists are not interested in bring back dinosaurs.

D. Because it is impossible for scientist to bring back extinct huge animals. 67. The Pyrenean ibex was mentioned to show that ______________.

A. scientists are only able to bring back small species B. scientist have managed to bring back Ice Age species C. scientists are likely to bring back recently extinct species D. animals can live very well after being brought back to life

68. Paragraph 3 mainly shows that bringing back extinct species is _________.

A. harmful B. realistic C. beneficial

D. double-edged

69. What makes environmentalists worried according to the passage?

A. That scientists cannot make up for the mistakes that they made in the past. B. That traditional conservation might be of no use by bringing species back. C. That scientists could lack the ability to bring back extinct species to life. D. That species that will be brought back to life will not survive long.

70. What is the probable attitude of Stewart Brand toward bringing extinct species back to life?

A. supportive

B. indifferent C. disapproving

D. worried

Our particular parenting style reflects our own way of “looking”. Here’s a great piece of writing reflecting parent’s particular ways on the parenting style that have become known humorously as helicopter parenting and submarine parenting.

managing every aspect of their child’s life. On the contrary, submarine parents remain “hidden” coming to the surface when guidance is needed.

While helicopter parents may have the best intentions, in reality, they are raising children with few problem-solving skills.Children with hovering parents never get the chance to face disappointment and build up their ability to recover from misfortune.

Think about your typical submarine. Submarines usually remain underwater. In case of a need for emergency surfacing, submarines can rise so quickly they are driven partially out of the water. Submarine parents also remain out of sight, yet able to pop up in the case of an emergency.

I admit I’m a submarine mom. My job as a parent is to have fun with my daughters while letting them explore and learn natural consequences.

My older daughter found herself acting in commercials and making more than minimum money as a teen. To give her a sense of the real world, I insisted she spend three weeks every summer, picking strawberries and earning $3.50 on a good day.

When my youngest daughter Sondra was six, she wanted a very expensive American Girl Doll. I cut the full color 18" picture out of the American Girl catalogue and had it laminated (压膜). “Here’s your American Girl Doll.” I said “When you turn nine, I’ll buy you the 3D doll on your birthday.” Sondra played with her flat doll for months, making clothes and furniture for her. She learned creativity. I saved $88.00. 71. What is the text mainly about? A. Various means of transportation. B. Funny experiences of a mom. C. Humorous stories about parents. D. Different styles of parenting.

Teens need independence, but how do you make sure they are safe? It’s tough to decide when to give your teen more freedom. One parent’s decision for his or her teen may not be right for other parents and their teens. Although every child is different, there are many experiences common to the teenage years. The most common may be the pull and push between dependence and independence.

Many teens are putting themselves at risk for committing acts of violence and other crimes. No wonder so many parents are concerned, even frightened; no wonder so many try to control the behavior of their teenage children. So, it is important for parents to make rules for their young children.

However, as children get older, they need to learn to make some of their own decisions and life choices. Teens need the chance to practice good decision-making skills, and to manage new life

experiences. Parents need to try their best to support their children.

Respect is a two-way street but it starts with you, which means that you should give your teens the respect that you would like to be given. Give them praise for their knowledge and abilities; pay attention to and listen to them. That means showing confidence in your teens, and being supportive. Parents should believe in your teens; set high standards for them, encourage them. Expect them to achieve their goals, and provide consistent love and support---including practical help-so they can achieve the promise that lies within them.

Teens are learning to take care of themselves as they prepare for adulthood. That’s what growing up is all about. Give them a right amount of freedom and independence. Encourage and promote responsibility and good decision----offering support and gentle help with difficult decisions. Let your teens know they will be give ____________ as they show increasingly responsible behavior.
