所以有“_______________,______________________”的谚语。

Everyone needs friends. We all like to feel close to someone. It is nice to have a friend to talk, laugh and do things with. Sure, there are times when we need to be alone. We don’t always want people around. But we would feel lonely if we never had a friend.

No two people are the same. Sometimes friends don’t get along well. That doesn’t mean they no longer like each other. Most of the time they will go on being friends. Sometimes friends move away. Then we feel very sad. We miss them very much. But we can call them and write to them. Maybe we wound never see them again. And we can make new friends. It is surprising to find out how much we like new people when we get to know them. Families sometimes name their children after a close friend. Many places are named after men and women, if they are friendly to people in a town. Some libraries are named in this way. So are some schools. We think of these people when we go to these places.

There is more good news for people, if they have friends. These people live longer than those people who don’t have friends. Why? It could be that they are happier. Being happy helps you stay well. Or it could be just knowing that someone cares. If someone cares about you, you take better care of yourself.

Every day, 340 million people speak it. One billion people are learning it and it is said that by 2050, half of the world’s population will be using it. What are we talking about? That is the global language—English.

The English language started in Britain in the 5th century. It is a mixed language. It was built up when German. Scandinavian and French invaders settled in England and created a common language for communication.

Today it is the official language of the UK, the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa and Ireland as well as many islands in the Caribbean. Many other countries and regions use it for politics and business, for example, India. Pakistan, Nigeria and the Philippines. English is also one of the official languages of Hong Kong.

But global advertising and pop music mean that in most countries, you will see McDonalds, we all know about “burgers”. “fries” and “milkshakes”. Songs by Madonna, Britney Spears and Celine Dion are in English. We can sing along, even if we do not understand what we are singing!

English is a messy (杂乱的) language. Every year, dictionaries include new words that talk about popular culture, for example, computer-related words such as "blogging", "download" and "chartroom". Also included are words that teenagers use. Who does not know “cool”, “OK” and “hello”?

Other languages also influence English. Many English words come from French. Words like “café” and expressions like “c'est la vie” (that is life) are all part of the English language. On the other hand, the French language includes English words like

If you have a chance to go to Finland, you will probably be surprised to find how “foolish” the Finnish people are.

Take the taxi drivers for example. Taxis in Finland are mostly high-class Benz with a fare of two US dollars a kilometer. You can go anywhere in one, tell the driver to drop you at any place, say that you have some business to attend to, and then walk off without paying your fare. The driver would not show the least sign of anxiety.

The dining rooms in all big hotels not only serve their guests, but also serve outside diners. Hotel guests have their meals free, so they naturally go to the free

dining rooms to have their meals. The most they would do to show their good faith is to wave their registration card to the waiter. With such a loose check, you can easily use any old registration card to take a couple of friends to dine free of charge.

The Finnish workers are paid by the hour. They are very much on their own as soon as they have agreed with the boss on the rate. From then on they just say how many hours they have worked and they will be paid accordingly.

With so many loopholes(漏洞)in everyday life, surely Finland must be a heaven to who love to take “petty advantages”. But the strange thing is, all the taxi passengers would always come back to pay their fare after they have attended to their business; not a single outsider has ever been found in the free hotel dining rooms. And workers always give an honest account of the exact hours they put in. As the Finns always act on good faith in everything they do, living in such a society has turned everyone into a real “gentleman”.

In a society of such high moral practice, what need is there for people to be on guard against others?

41. While taking a taxi in Finland, _____.

An old man went to live with his son, daughter-in-law, and four-year-old grandson. The family ate together at the table, but the old man’s shaky hands and failing sight made eating difficult. Peas rolled off his spoon onto the floor. When he grasped the glass, milk spilled on the tablecloth. His son and daughter-in-law became angry with him. So they set a small table in the corner. There the old man ate alone while the rest of the family enjoyed dinner.

Since he had broken a dish or two, the old man’s food was served in a wooden bowl. Still, the only words the couple had for him was sharp admonitions(警告) when he dropped a fork or spilled milk. His grandson watched it silently. One evening, the son of the old man noticed the child playing with wood scraps and asked him sweetly, “What are you doing?” The boy responded, “Oh, I am making a bowl for you and mum to eat your food in when I grow up.”

The words struck the boy’s father so hard that he was speechless. Then tears started to stream down his cheeks. That evening he led his father back to the family table. From then on, the old man ate every meal with the family. Neither husband nor wife seemed to care any longer when a fork was dropped, milk spilled or the tablecloth soiled.

With its highly-developed economy, the people in my hometown are leading a happy life. It offers children modern education and 90% of the high school leavers are admitted to universities. Every year the picturesque scenery attracts lots of visitors from home and abroad.

The story tells us that the grandfather was treated badly by his son and daughter-in-law and that the couple’s attitudes changed after they saw their son preparing a wooden bowl for them.

As for me, I always have respect and love for the elderly. My grandparents tend to talk about their past good old days to me. To be honest, I have no interest in their topics, but I always pretend to enjoy listening, because I know that will make them happy. Besides, I have formed a habit of taking a walk with them after dinner on weekends, talking about my study and their rich experience and asking them for advice sometimes.

In my opinion, we should treat the elderly just as how we want to be treated when we are old. Honor and respect should be given to them by their families and the whole society, because they have devoted themselves to the development of our country. Besides, they’ve already contributed a lot to the society and their families. They deserve the love from us all.
