Part 1 Introduction
1.1 Motivation
First of all, we find we usually use a label to describe a country. For example, France is romantic; America is free and open; Egypt is mystery. So some questions hit us. What is the impression of China on foreigners? Is it true? Is there any labels they use to describe Chinese?Then, with the step of reform and revolution in China,both of the lives and education of Chinese have been improved. But when we watch news on Internet,we find that there are still some prejudice about Chinese. So we want to know China in foreigners’eyes.

To show us the real image of China in foreigners’ eyes . To know ourselves better. To overcome our shortcomings specifically. To better introduce our culture to the world
1.4 Difficulties
In order to complete the interview successfully, our team discussed and made some preparations all Saturday. However, we still met some difficulties. Compared with some districts, economy in MinHang District is relatively backward and the population is not very large, so we got up early on Saturday to go to some bustling districts longing to meet more foreigners. However, maybe the time we chose was not very suit. We did not meet lots of foreigners in the morning. We just hung out in the street under the strong sun. Fortunately, our interview became more smooth in the

afternoon.
What’s more, many interviewees wouldn’t like to take the video, so we may miss some details. On the other hand, it increases our difficulties in organizing the information after the interview.
Part 2Background
2.1 Some views on China
1, Chinese people’s feeling is different.
“Some Chinese just want a common job and a family, like to complete a goal in their life.”
2, Chinese people like reputation very much.
“I know if I don’t prove myself in front of my students, I will have to listen to a “lecture” about China’s five-thousand-year history.”, said by Chris Coley, teaching international relations in Renmn University of China.
3, Chinese people are sensitive about some topics.
“The opinions of Chinese people may not reconcile with those of Western people on some topics. In fact, I really don’t know what the ideas of Chinese people on some sensible questions are, because Chinese people always keep off them.”, said by Gerard Van Brecht, from the Netherlands.
4. China is a confusing but mysterious country. Chinese people’s personalities are also uncertain.

Part 3 Case Study
Last week, we did a research in midnorthern campus. The survey emphasized on
the different impression in foreigners’ eyes before and after they come to china.
Before the interview, we guess it may be such: crowed street,
uncultivatedChinese, Chinese Kung Fu, Confucius and so on. But later we find it is
quite different from our imagination.
During the research, we interviewed a few foreigners and asked them some
questions. That is “what’s the impression before and after you come to china?”,“is
there anything about china that isn’t true?”, and“what leads to these
distinctions.”After that, we heard about several interesting answers. According to the
reply, we make a conclusion about the key words: food, people, environment and
culture.
3.1 Food
Each foreigner refers to the Chinese food. There is sharp distinction between
reality and imagination. Contrary to what they find in local china town, food in china
is generally healthy, delicious and beautifully presented, which is different from what
they have heard about, such as unhealthy, fat and dirty. So why Chinese food made in
foreign country is so bad?Why Chinese food leave a bad impression in foreigners’
eyes? It isa question worth thinking about.
3.2 People
Most of interviewees say that, before they come to china, they heard that Chinese
are hard-working, noisy and unfriendly. However, when they come here, they find it is
different. Most of Chinese care about face problem very much, which stands for
reputation.If someone plays joke on him, it might offend him. What’s more, Mike, a
English teacher from German told me that, as Chinese students are so hard-working,
they know a lot but talk little. And they prefer to listening to teachers rather than

discussing in the class. This is quite different from cooperative study in German.
3.3 Environment
Climate and air pollution is another problem they care about very much. Compared with the weather in their country, it changes frequently, especially in shanghai. Sometimes it is windy and cold, but sometimes it is dry and hot. What’s worse, fog is a so regular thing that they have to wear respirators. In their respective, it is urgent to deal with pollution problems for China.
3.4 Culture
Absorbed by Chinese culture,most of foreigners come to China. In their view, Chinese culture might be great, various or fantastic. The way they learn about Chinese culture is mainly through Chinese Kung Fu, Confucius or national news. Specially, Kung Fu, traditional Chinese painting, poem, opera, cooking, clothing, architecture and many other kinds of cultural forms make up the splendid Chinese culture. The kinds listed above are the typical ones which connect to each other at the same time. If one wants to know or study Chinese culture deeply, he or she must spend much time on it, otherwise he or she can only get the tip of an iceberg. There is no wonder that they never expect that most of Chinese don’t play Kung Fu at all.
