Significance:

Coco Chanel was an innovator and forward thinker. She had a unique point of view which perfectly coincided with the zeitgeist of her time. Specifically, she believed women should be able to dress as comfortably as a man. Her design aesthetic featured menswear for women including white cuffs and collars to resemble a man’s suit, Polo sweaters, French sailor shirts and fisherman sweaters. . During and after WWI, women simply could not keep up with the tasks they necessarily had to undertake when men went to war. The simplified, comfortable, uncorseted clothes Chanel created were both elegant and practical. Along with the adoption of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote, Chanel’s designs ushered in a new era. When styles changed in 1947 and the hourglass figure came back in vogue, Chanel stepped aside rather than compromise her vision. As the Women’s Rights Movement began to gain steam again at the end of the 1950’s, Chanel reopened her Couture House and enjoyed more massive success and acclaim, using her strong vision to dress women in style throughout the 1960’s.
