外国文学史读后感

Reading 《Literature History of the United States》, I have so many thoughts and I am impressed on its splendid literary achievements, I was deeply moved in many aspects.

Firstly, I want to say that any country has its own special precious civilization and culture. They belong to that country, but they also consist of the whole world’s literature. Literature history of the United States tells us the very important parts in the development of the country, describes the development of literature, from the book, I can see a vivid picture of the United States. This is a very good way to know the excellent literature.

Secondly, I find that many great writers’ literary works are realistic and serious. They all tell the real things and personal feelings; they give us a vivid scene. I want to say that we should learn this, when we want to write something, we need to find or attain materials from our colorful life, because life is the most realistic source for us. And I also see that though many works tell terrible wars or disasters, almost writers still hold positive attitudes and encourage people to overcome the difficulties and have confidence on future. This is also meaningful to our modern life. Any problems that we meet has its solution to lead us to solve, any difficulties cannot obstruct us make progress. Whatever happens, we should be optimistic and believe that the bright future is coming.

Thirdly, I realized that almost every writer would use some certain ways or strategies to describe the certain things, this makes the description become more realistic and readers looks like to be in that real scene. Like Michael Lennon, Malcolm Bradbury, Jeffrey Walsh, they are war novelist, and James Vinson, Daniel Stern, they created Jewish novels. Using ingenious strategies when you write something can make your writing vivid and beautiful. We all know that the same topic has kinds of ways to write, everyone has his own thoughts and logic, and readers must have different estimates. I think that all the readers like reading interesting books, so when we write something, we should make our writing attractive and we can also make progress in writing.

Fourthly, I realized that books play the very important role in our life whenever the level of life changes. Book is the very first stage of what we learn, now we are in our modern village where so many industries---IT industries, tourism industries---crop up every day and this brave new world seem a little dehumanizing and inhospitable to a lot of people. And I think that the world can no longer be defined as a place on a map or list or people in organizations but I also think the true value, the essence of our village remains the same. It is the networks of values relationship that support our lives and we can learn those things from our books. And I think we are so lucky to be alive at this moment of this history. Never before have had our nation enjoyed so much prosperity and so much so

much social progress with so little internal cries. And never before have had young people had so much great opportunity to practice ourselves and, therefore, have a profound obligation to build a more perfect nation of our ancestors’ dream.

If we want to be an excellent people, we must read more firstly; absorb many different writers’ opinions, and then we may have our own ideas, valuable ideas. But in our modern life, I find that so many teenagers fail to put a high value on reading books, they pay more attention on pursuing fashion. The craze to vie with each other is prevalent in colleges and universities. I always think and insist that students should concentrate themselves exclusively on studies, which should be on the top of their agenda. Holding the right concept of value make sense. To earn an impressive academic performance, we college students must pour determined efforts into study and pay no attention to vogue or other wasteful things. Reading and reading, as long as you stick to read books, you will success!

Sentiment after Reading A Midsummer Night Dream

We all know that Shakespare is more famous for his tragedies than comedies. But in my mind, i prefer comedy because i love happy endings. Once Yu Qiuyu said words like this, tragedy is not the greatest, neither is the comedy, bur those tragicomedy that let people read it in tears and laughs. I think a midsummer night dream is such a tragicomedy.

Lysander and Demetrius both love Hermia,but Hermia fall in love with Lysander. But they could not marry though they love each other. Demetrius had Hermia’s Dad’s permission to marry Hermia. Hermia must marry Demetrius that her father choose --- or die according to Athen’slaw ! In order to save their love, they decided to run away from Athens. But Hermia’s friend, Helena, who loved Demetrius told Demetrius about their escape plan in order to gain some comfort from him.

They ran away into a fairyland wood outside Athens. Many strange things happened. The king of the fairies, Oberon, used a plant that had strange powers to repair their love. Alough they made some mistakes at first. Finally Hermia got married with Lysander and Helena married Demetrius, and then they lived happily. This is the general idea of the story.

There are ups and downs with the story when i read it. And now i close the book, there is something remain in my mind.

In the beginning of the story, Hermia fall in love with Lysander betraying his father’s wiling. But according to Athen’s law, the daughter should die if she could not do as her father said. When reading this sector, i was amazed by this kind of relentless justice. So the girls must face the problem of dying or love, which reminds me of a Chinese story called Liang Shanbo Yu Zhu Yingtai. Zhu was a girl, and she pretended to be boy and went to school when females were not acceptable in school. And during her school time, she fell in live with Liang. But her father wanted her to marry the son of a high-ranking official. At last, Zhu chose to die and Liang followed her. I thing sometimes parents want their children have a good future and decide their fate by themselves, however, that is unfair to children. Everyone has the right to choose their own life.

Helena, a beauty abandoned by Demetrius, do not complained that Hermia was more beautiful than you, or you loved the wrong person. When the man you loved confessed love to your great friend, should you insisted to pursue you love or stopped. I really feel pity for you, for your love betrayed you and escaped you. I am also proud of you, for your braveness to pursuing your love. I consider you know that the more you do, the more painful you are. And when i read the book, i can feel how cruel that Demetrius to you, and i know you get hurt. What moves me most was that you never give up no matter how hard it was.

The thought of man is also hard to understand in this story. Everything changes in the blink of an eye. Lysander transmitted his love to Helena and thought she was the most beautiful woman in the world while left his Hermia alone and ignored her sorrows. What was more, all the swear between him and Hermia were just a joke. So in this story, when the man was loving the woman, the woman could believe all beautiful and faithful words he said were true. But when he did not love you any more, all cruel words and hard expressions were still true. It sames that the men in it are cold-blood without heart.

The story was developing more and more fascinating. When the two men all fell in love with Helena, who was abandoned by both of them before, the war between the two women was beginning. The woman who was in favor thought that the two men were playing tricks on her. The other woman who was out of favor considered that her friend betrayed her and caused her losing love. All was women. Always had ridiculous thoughts. Most of time they owe the mistake to another women rather than the men who made troubles.

It was in mass and the two girls were hurt. And then the story end. After sleeping for a while, great changes had taken place. Lysander loved Hermia again and Demetrius loved Helena again. What a happy ending it was!

I guess the reason why Shakeapare wrote this story is that he also wants to do the same thing just as the people he modeled. We all know that he also is forced to marry a woman that he does not love at all. So he makes these characters purposed to let them to resist the ruin of the society.

A midsummer night’s dream is just a dream that cannot exist in reality. We are human beings and our thoughts can not be changed by something like drug or other things. There is no magic that can make people fall in love with the living thing seen upon awaking. If someday people’s sentiment is controlled by this kind of magic, this will be a big trouble. Emotions are subject things, there will be difference between man and machine. This situation can just exist in Shakeapare’s masterpiece. But finally, he makes the most beautiful marriage in the world.

Shakespare’s masterpiece is really a cultural peak. A midsummer night’s dream explain the essence of tragicomedy. We can feel a big shock when we read the story, we cried and finally laughed. But dreams awaken, it is just a midsummer night’s dream.
